What are Skin Rashes?

Skin rashes may be indicated when skin shows raised spots or becomes red, often resulting from illness or allergies. Although there are many types of rashes, the most common forms appear below.

Types of Rashes

Contact dermatitis may result from contact with various substances and chemicals. People exhibit a wide range of reactions to various substances. While some may have no reaction to a given chemical or fragrance, for example, others may quickly develop a rash. We will review your medical history and perform testing to analyze the nature of your reaction and to prescribe a treatment to relieve your symptoms.

Diaper rash appears as a skin inflammation in the diaper area of a baby’s bottom, and may result from prolonged contact with wet diapers. The discomfort caused by the inflammation may cause your baby to become restless and irritable, especially during diaper changes. Zinc oxide is a popular remedy for a typical bout of diaper rash; however, if that treatment proves ineffective then please contact our specialists to help remedy the situation.

Heat rash, aka prickly heat, is caused by perspiration combined with a blockage of your pores and typically occurs during hot weather. Red or clear bumps may appear, often under tight clothing and within skin folds. Heat rash on the chest, shoulders and neck is common in infants, and normally will subside when the skin cools. Please contact our skin rash specialists if your child’s skin rash does not resolve itself after a few days.

Poison ivy is a rash caused by an allergic reaction from oils in poison ivy, poison sumac or poison oak that are embedded within the leaves, roots and stems of these plants. Mild cases will respond favorably to cool baths and over-the-counter lotions. However, stubborn cases, especially when they spread to the face or genitals may require stronger prescription medication. Please contact our skin rash experts if you are a loved one is experiencing a severe or stubborn case of poison ivy.
